Art Within Activism

Art Within Activism creates art within Portland-based activist initiatives, such as marches, actions, and causes taken up by different grassroots community groups. We experiment with diverse mediums, like graphic design, social practice, performance, and sculpture, and we study actions which seek to resolve diverse problems, like foreclosure, hunger, the climate crisis, unemployment, lack of healthcare, biodiversity loss, xenophobia/immigrant detention, animal exploitation, and prison population growth.

“I didn’t want to make art about issues, but in them, with them, imbedded in the issues themselves. I wanted to try to make art that intervenes directly in the problem. I didn’t want to illustrate things, I didn’t want to represent things, but instead try to transform them.”

– John Jordan, The Lab of Insurrectionary Imagination
